What is your vision for Cary Chinese School?

We consider our school a NEW TYPE of Chinese School. We do share common objectives with our sister schools, such as promoting Chinese language literacy and cultural exchange enrich cultural diversity in our community. On the other hand, there are some CCS-specific characteristics that we would like to share with you:

  • We believe earlier is better.

In terms of language, earlier is always better. Long term, children who have gone through an early childhood immersion experience in languages show greater cognitive flexibility, greater facility in concept formation, greater creativity and problem-solving skills in verbal and math problems, and, obviously, a greater facility of vocabulary. Research indicates that young children are highly receptive to language acquisition, and second-language learning comes most easily early on in a child's life.

To have our children conceive Chinese language systematically at a younger age, we offer classes to kids as young as 4 years old. We have written our own textbooks for those little ones: small 8x5 books, to ensure easy access for small hands. Each book contains a small illustrated rhythm or story, a little bit of math, in-class and take-home exercises, and a summary list for parents to follow, etc. Kids will be excited by receiving those cute little books every week. Each week's class is broken down into three 30-minute teaching sections, one 10-minute break, and one 20-minute snack break.

  • We believe teaching methodology can make a big difference.

There is nothing wrong if you think no matter which textbook is being used, whatever methodology is behind it, with the right teacher, certain learning goals can eventually be reached. But would you agree a good textbook with a more appropriate teaching strategy will make everything easier?

Most traditional textbooks and teaching methods adopted in US Chinese schools, advocate learning Chinese characters through Pinyin and require memorizing a lot of writing characters. Unfortunately, most of those words do not show up anywhere else, and there is an insufficiency of appropriate reading material to reinforce what students have learned. Very often, students tend to read the Pinyin rather than the character even though they already know the character by heart. As a result, they gradually lose their reading ability; they memorize the required characters each week, but forget them months later. With the lack of fresh reading material, their effort reaps little reward.

Using the Ma Liping methodology, we see solutions to those problems: students learn characters first, through fun rhythm, story, and they learn to WRITE some of them, but just RECOGNIZE the rest. With extensive supplemental reading material, composed of 95-98% of the characters that they have learned, it's like rolling a snowball; their vocabulary builds up fast, so they are capable of reading materials at the right age and knowledge level. Their reading ability is not compromised by their knowledge of Pinyin, and their interest is boosted by the fun and accomplishment brought by reading those interesting stories that mostly cannot be found in English! Moreover, Maliping's CD-ROM homework (besides its light paper-pencil homework) is a huge plus to attract students to their Chinese studies, too.

  • We believe each child is different, and that there is no such thing as one size fits all.

While different Chinese schools have differing teaching philosophies, we're pleased to offer a learning option that we feel nicely complements what our sister schools are doing.

  • We believe learning should be fun.

Learning activities should motivate students' interest; they should be fun. We have put a lot of emphasis on and efforts into achieving this goal. Please let us know if you have any suggestions and ideas; we hope we can work together to continually improve our teaching and to make a positive impact on our students.

  • We believe it is equally important to introduce both the Chinese language and culture to non-Chinese students.

A better understanding of the Chinese culture will facilitate learning the language. Moreover, through interactions with their Chinese classmates, non-Chinese students have an opportunity to practice what they learn in the classroom. Finally, by introducing non-Chinese students into our school, we hope to enrich the overall learning environment.

  • We have a very strict legal and financial system, with a lean administrative team.

As our main focus is on teaching, we wish to remain as efficient as we possibly can while ensuring that the school is properly run under strict policies.

Who are the founders of Cary Chinese School?

The Cary Chinese School was founded by Ms. Yi Sun and Ms. Janet Wang in 2003.


How much are tuitions?

As a non-profit organization, CCS charges minimum tuitions to cover the basic costs for running the school. The tuition rates differ for different programs (CHL, CSl, and ACT). Please contact the program directors for details.


What are the school hours? Location?

CCS operates on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 1:00pm. During this time, there is a two-hour language session in the morning, followed by two hours of activity classes from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

All classes are held at Apex Middle School.


Do you offer any culture and activity classes?

Yes. We offer Painting, Chinese Dancing, Chess, Music, Go! , English Writing, Olympiad Math, SAT and many other activity classes for students 4 years old and above. Please contact Mr. Owen Chen at owen.chen@carycs.org for more information.

What's the difference between CHL and CSL?

The Chinese as a Heritage Language (CHL) program is designed for students who can speak fluent Chinese (Mandarin). The Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) program is geared toward students (both children and adults) whose spoken Chinese is at beginning or intermediate levels. 

Genrally, if the child can speak Chines at home and learn Chinese from his parent, the child is recommended to enter into CHL program. Otherwise, CSL would be a better choice.


CHL中,马立平系列与《中文》系列的区别在哪里?

1、"马立平系列"采用"直接识字法"(先识字后拼音),按照"多读少写、先读后写"的思路,配套大量课后阅读、合理的CD光盘和作业本练习,具有进度快、识字多、阅读早的优势。马立平高年级适合中文水平较好的学生。

2、暨南大学《中文》教材是由国家侨办集大量人力物力打造出来的一套适应海外教学的中文教材。这套教材印刷精美,图文并茂,知识与趣味相结合,循序渐进,每周作业安排合理。与《马立平》教材的区别在于,暨南大学《中文》强调培养孩子对中文"听说读写"的全面掌握,确保中文基本功的扎实。

What is the school's refund policy?

The cchool allows the student to withdraw from any Chinese language class during the first two weeks of each semester and the tuition can be 100% refunded before the end of the second week of each school semester. 50% of the tuition can be refunded on or before the 8th week of the school semester. No refund will be made after the 8 th week of the school semester or if a student is expelled from the school.

The School allows withdrawal from the Activity Classes only during the first two weeks of the semester and the tuition can be 100% refunded before the end of the second week of each school semester. No refund will be made after the 2nd week of the school semester or if a student is expelled from the school.

How can I get involved as a volunteer at the school?

Please consult Principal Yalin Xiong(principal@carycs.org). CCS always welcomes parent participation.


How do I join the PTA?

You will be automatically joined after making a full payment of language-class tuition.


Can my child or I sit in the class to see if we like it?

Generally we do not allow parents to sit in class, but if you do feel the need to observe a class, please arrange it with program director.


Can I request a specific teacher for my child?

CCS will consider parents' preferences but reserve the right to make final student assignments.
